Thorax

Foreign body

Something that should not be there. A radiopaque object in the oesophagus, airway or thorax; bones, needles and stones show, many plastics and fabrics do not.

Two different patients, so size and positioning differ as well as the finding. Compare what the finding changes, not the dog.

What to look for

  • A shape of bone or metal opacity along the path of the oesophagus, often at the thoracic inlet, the heart base or the hiatus.
  • Gas or fluid around it in the oesophagus.

Common causes

Swallowed bones, fish hooks, needles, toys.

Against the normal

The normal oesophagus holds nothing visible.
