The brain in MRI, sequence by sequence.

Real MRI scans you scroll through plane by plane. Learn the normal brain first, then read a head-trauma case and see what each sequence shows.

Normal brains

T1-weighted at 0.4 mm: grey matter darker than white, fluid dark. Find the lateral ventricles, the corpus callosum, the cerebellum and the olfactory bulbs in each plane.

Head trauma, Yorkshire Terrier

Eleven days after injury: a large scalp haematoma over the frontal and parietal bones and a left cerebral contusion. On T2 fluid and swelling are bright; FLAIR darkens free fluid so swollen brain stands out; T1 with contrast shows where the blood-brain barrier has broken down.
