How they differ along the set

What changes from one end of the series to the other, which is most of what there is to know about any one of them.

  • One at the ventral end of each rib: the cartilaginous part of it, where the bony os costale leaves off.Miller 2020, p. 292
  • The first nine reach the sternum, which is what makes those ribs sternal, or true.Miller 2020, p. 292
  • The first pair meet the first sternebra itself; the rest meet the blocks of cartilage between the sternebrae.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • The cartilages of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth join the ninth's to form the costal arch.Miller 2020, p. 292
  • The thirteenth pair end free in the muscle of the flank.Miller 2020, p. 292
  • The ninth is the longest, and the cartilages shorten both ways from it.Miller 2020, p. 292
  • The costochondral junctions of the third to the eighth lie nearly in one horizontal plane.Miller 2020, p. 292
