The sternebrae

Sternebrae

The row of blocks that makes the floor of the chest. The first and the last are not like the others and have pages of their own; these are the ones in between, each taking a pair of costal cartilages at its joints.

How they differ along the set

What changes from one end of the series to the other, which is most of what there is to know about any one of them.

  • The sternum is a row of sternebrae, flattened from above at the front and turned on edge towards the back.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • Short blocks of cartilage, the intersternebral cartilages, join one sternebra to the next.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • The sternal ends of the ribs meet those blocks of cartilage rather than the sternebrae themselves — all but the first pair, which meet the first sternebra directly.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • The first sternebra is longer than the rest, widened in its front half, and carries side projections for the first costal cartilages; it is the manubrium.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • The last is wide and flat, about three times as long as it is broad, and sometimes has an elliptical hole in its back half; it is the xiphoid process.Miller 2020, p. 295
  • The cartilaginous joints between the sternebrae may turn to bone in an old dog.Miller 2020, p. 295
