Thorax

Interstitial pattern

A hazy lung. Increased opacity of the lung's supporting tissue, giving a hazy or grainy lung in which vessels look less sharp. It can be unstructured (diffuse haze) or structured (nodules).

Two different patients, so size and positioning differ as well as the finding. Compare what the finding changes, not the dog.

What to look for

  • Vessels and airways less sharply outlined than expected.
  • A diffuse increase in lung opacity, or discrete nodules.
  • Easy to over-read on an expiratory or underexposed film.

Common causes

Early oedema or pneumonia, haemorrhage, fibrosis, metastatic neoplasia (nodular), ageing.

Against the normal

Normal lung shows crisp vessels against a dark background.
