About the levator of the upper lip of the pig
Levator of the upper lip is a muscle of the head (head), one on each side of the body. Its name in the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria is Musculus levator labii superioris. You can turn it above, see it in place in the head of the pig, and open it inside the whole animal in Vetomica.
Where it runs from and to
A muscle is told apart from its neighbours by what it takes hold of at each end, which is also what decides what it does when it shortens.
- Origin
- Preorbital region of the maxilla. In the pig the belly is large and pennate and its tendon reaches the rostral bone of the snout, so it is often called the levator rostri.
- Insertion
- Upper lip and the rostral plate of the snout.
- Action
- Raises the upper lip and the snout.
- Nerve
- Dorsal buccal branch of the facial nerve.
Written for Vetomica in its own words from the standard reference anatomy of the pig; the books it was checked against are listed below.
